Northampton’s origins trace back to the Anglo-Saxon period, when it emerged as a strategic settlement along the River Nene. By the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066, Northampton had grown into a prominent town, and was mentioned in the Domesday Book.
In the medieval era, Northampton gained further importance as a centre of trade and governance. Northampton Castle , built by the Normans, bolstered the town’s defensive capabilities and played a crucial role in its historical development. The town also hosted several important councils and parliaments during this time, and it became a key political and administrative hub.
The medieval market square in Northampton, established around 1189, became a focal point for commerce, and the market still operates to this day.
Now, Northampton’s history is marked by its industrial growth, particularly in the boot and shoe manufacturing industry, which earned it a reputation as a global centre for quality footwear production. Today, Northampton embraces its rich heritage while evolving as a vibrant, contemporary community.
The sporting culture in Northampton has an emphasis on rugby and football.
Northampton Saints RFC have their home ground at Franklin’s Gardens, an iconic venue. Formed in 1880 as Northampton St James, the name evolved following their nickname ‘the Saints’. They play in premiership rugby, the top division of rugby union. Since the early 1900s, the team has played in black, green and gold colours.
At the end of the 2023/2024 season, Saints finished first, enabling them to complete in the 2024/2025 European Rugby Champions Cup.
To date, Saints have won seven major titles. They were European Champions in 2000, and English Champions in 2014 and 2024. They have also won the secondary European Rugby Challenge Cup twice, in 2009 and 2014, the Anglo-Welsh Cup in 2010, and the inaugural Premiership Rugby Cup in 2019.
For football fans, Northampton Town Football Club, based at Sixfields Stadium, completes in the lower tiers of the English Football League. They have a dedicated following from the town and are known as the Cobblers.
