In at the deep end – Minster’s Wetsuit Warrior goes the extra mile at the Great North Swim!

Ian Handy, Customer Services Director at Minster Cleaning Services Liverpool & Wirral branch, is safely back on dry land after taking part in the Great North Swim 2017 in Lake Windermere to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. This is a fantastic achievement, especially in view of the choppy conditions and the fact that Ian hadn’t swum seriously for 35 years! We are all very proud of Ian’s achievement and his support of such a remarkable charity. Here’s Ian’s story:

“Earlier this year my son suggested I needed some sort of challenge for 2017. I thought he meant a decent pub crawl or something similar, but NO, the idea that arrived was to swim 1 mile in the open water of lake Windermere as part of the Great North Swim 2017.

Now apart from bobbing around in warm Mediterranean seas whilst on holiday, the last time I swam properly was roughly 35 years ago! So the first training swims (in a nice cosy warm swimming pool) came as a huge shock to my system and I was utterly exhausted after no more than 100 meters. The reality of this challenge hit home massively – not least how to squeeze myself into a wetsuit!!

After time in the pool and practice open water swims in Salford Quays (yes, the ones full of debris and rats!) Friday 9th July arrived scarily quickly and I headed up to Windermere for the event.

With a water temperature of just under 15 degrees, roughly 250 other swimmers starting at the same time, choppy waters and nerves that had gone to jelly, off I went.

It was tricky to see where the course went and several times I found myself heading out into the lake rather than round the circuit, but nevertheless survived and recorded a time of 35 minutes. Having staggered out of the water I spent some considerable time looking back at the lake, surrounding views and other swimmers finishing only to then realise the official timing point was much further along the harbour side!!!

Whilst there are some amazing improvements with cancer cures, it remains true that many of us will fall victim to a cancer and the support given to the person and their family/friends by Macmillan is truly outstanding and something I experienced personally during my Father’s illness some years ago. So choice of charity was an easy one.”
